This is the time of the year for people with type 2 diabetes (or anyone) to really prepare for the cold of winter.
The best way to do that is to take walks outside, especially in the morning and the evening (of course, low impact exercise for type 2 diabetes health is superb!)
Get bundled up in the chill and head out and start to acclimate yourself to the change of seasons.
Short walks are fine.
If you are really afraid of the cold, then try a more assertive way to prepare for the winter.
THE COLD SHOWER PRACTICE
Yes, I am serious.
We will use the Kaizen approach of small steps stacked up to make this EASY.
First, take a hot shower. At the end, step back and turn on the cold water. Then simply place your hands in the cold water. That is it.
The next day, take a hot shower. At the end, step back and turn on the cold water. Then simply place your hands and then your feet in the cold water. That is it.
On the third day, take a hot shower. At the end, step back and turn on the cold water. Then simply place your hands, then feet, then arms in the cold water.
On the fourth day, take a hot shower. At the end, step back and turn on the cold water. Then simply place your hands, then feet, (one part at a time) then arms, then legs in the cold water.
Repeat and add body parts. After a couple weeks. You have got them all. Then use the same technique and sequence any day you want to :
A. Prepare your body for cold heartiness
B. Get a fantastic morning wake up!
You aren’t going to read this in any books on reversing type 2 diabetes, but this will build health. And when you build health, you increase the likelihood that you will defend yourself against the ravages of type 2 diabetes.
By the way, there is some HEAVENLY COOL news coming down the road.

The title of the paper is Interleukin-1–Receptor Antagonist in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
After thirteen weeks of injections of anakinra, a substance generally reduced in insulin producing cells of people with type II diabetes. The results were at best interesting, but when compared to the work Dr. Gabriel Cousins did with a raw foods diet, an active lifestyle and the introduction of self development technologies, the research seems flacid. I am not a raw foodist, nor am I even a significant advocate. (Though I love many things about the movement). But the demonstrated benefit of Dr. Cousin’s work has to be seriously considered here.
The factors that I see limiting the speed at which the development of significant treatment options for people with type II diabetes depends on the following factors:
1. Patients taking personal responsibility for their health.
2. Type II diabets gets recontextualized as primarily lifestyle and diet related.
3. An agreed upon standard that treating an imbalance by fortifying the imbalance (in the case of taking medication as the primary treatment for type II diabetes) instead of treating the cause, is an erroneous perspective.
4. Recognize that significant economic factors maintain the current emphasis on medication and technology driven treatment plans (which are not bad or wrong, mearly misplaced and overused), including the inability to patent a healthy diet and lifestyle and the subsiquent deluge of investment into proprietary research resulting in treatments that can be owned, licensed and sold.
If you are suffering from the effects of type II diabetes. I invite you to consider the above contextual reference points. If you are in the medical profession, please consider the significance that diet and lifestyle can have for your patients. I am not anti-medicine, I am pro DO WHAT WORKS…

I am surprised when I notice something new in food. An ingredient, a new manufacturing method, or even a new dietary theory. I live in this world and few things are new to me in this way. That is why I was so excited to read the ingredient list on the side of a box of Applause crackers.
Interesterified soybean, canola, corn oils… plus good old hydrogenated oils.
But what is interesterified oil? I set out to find out.
I had come accross the esterification of oils in past research, but never noted it as worth remembering because I hadn’t ever seen it in food as an ingredient. So I never thought it worth knowing about, until now of course.
I absolutely love being a food detective. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it was a not so trivial game of triviall pursuit as a child that galvanized a need to know more about one facet of life than other people. Whatever the reason, I am becoming a walking encyclopedia of cross referenced nutritional data.
I set out to discover what this is at the first place we all look. Google. Now the trick to searching google is to know the source, know the how, what and where of search engine protocol and to always have an offline back up to research as well.
I have my trusted on-line sources. Weston Price Foundation. The on-line education forum for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (a private forum for professional health counselors around the world), Mercola.com, and several on-line encyclopedias.
On my search, I decided to go to the source, the industrial refiners of edible oils. Here is the scoop on interesterified oils from BUNGE, a large manufacturer / producer of edible oils:

Here is my take on this new development. Food manufacturers are not going to give up the market share of refined polyunsaturate oil, so they are getting around the trans fat labeling by mixing small amounts of fully hydrogenated oil with liquid polyunsaturate oils and calling “interesterified oil.” They claim that fully hydrogenated oil is healthier. Since there is less trans fat, they can sell this product to food manufacturers for use in commercial dressings, baked goods, candies and anything else that used to have partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list.
In plain english, interestification means mixing fully hydrogenated oil with liquid polyunsaturate oil to produce a consistency similar to partially hydrogenated oil, which is the source of trans fats. The solution to the trans fat problem; from the manufacturer perspective!
Well, it looks like I am going to have to get used to telling my clients to look for ‘interesterified oil” as well as partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list. Of course, no one can ever trust the label regarding trans fat anyway, since the FDA allows .5 grams of trans fat per serving to be labeled “no trans fat.”
Hey, I am not saying food companies are evil. No way. They are in the business of turning a profit. This major shift away from domestic hydrogenated oil by savvy consumers must have many food industry reps scared. If it was my business, would I face the facts and look at the health implications if my paycheck were on the line. I hope so, but security and safety are powerful motivators of human behaviour.
The bottom line for my work remains the same. Eat unprocessed oils. Eat mostly high quality monounsaturated oils and some high quality saturated fats. High quality means heat, light and oxygen protected oils that have not been chemically extracted. That solves the whole freakin’ problem of trans fats and gets you past the other problems we haven’t even covered, rancidity, oxidation and pro-inflammatory factors.

Why are doctors still generally prescribing glucophage and other meds when a patient comes in and shows high blood glucose levels, without giving any comprehensive dietary recommendations.
Can’t we finally agree that 98% of people with type II diabetes (under the age of 75, for the sake of cancelling out much of the hereditary action), develop the condition because of their lifestyle and diet? Is this still politically incorrect? Is this still inappropriate because it will hurt people’s feelings or take away their right to eat and live however they want?
I am all for freedom of choice. If I want to take a pill and ignore my actions, then give me that choice. But by God, we need to give people the choice to change their diet and lifestyle and thereby change their health.
It seems like this is still a fringe idea. And then we have the hyper-ventilating raving eccentrics touting cure-all nutritional philosophies who completely eschew the mainstream approach.
I am not into that either.
I have utmost respect for conventional western medicine. I just think that the teeter totter of emphasis is WAY OVER THE TOP FOR EXPENSIVE, TECHNOLOGICAL, PHARMACUETICAL, and INVASIVE approaches. Because, hey, guess what, that is what MD’s study. For all you MD’s out there, especially my friends, thank you for sewing people up, removing unfriendly invaders, setting bones, diagnosing wierd pathogens and all the other stuff that I have no idea about.
But in the type II diabetes world, give some respect to the health counselors, the folks that can set people straight. We want to use silly things, like eating real food, to help people get better. I know, it is a crazy idea, very simple, but we get results. Add in some exercise and WHAM! Fantastic. I understand that type II diabetes is a tricky set of imbalances and so I want to work with my MD friends to moniter my client’s progress through testing protocols and I am all for using pharmacueticals when appropriate. But once you start, it is harder to stop, you know what I mean?
And for the people with type II. I don’t underestimate the freak out factor that may be in between the lines in an articel like this. You may be thinking this health nut is trying to make me eat twigs and leaves. Well, yeah, but not really.
Health Counselors work with clients where ever they are at and helkp them make small, sustainable changes that add up over time. Health counselors are experts at working with their clients on all levels so that the work feels digestible and achievable.
Remember, you are what you eat. And you become what you think. And who you spend time with now is a predictor of where you will be in 5 years.

I went down to the Barbara Davis Center for childhood diabetes last week and took my little girl down there with me.
I say down there because it is south from Boulder in Denver. The drive down was tough since my little one, Marisol, was feeling not so hot.
At the center, I had blood drawn to participate in the trial net study, a comprehensive research project tracking antibodies in the blood stream that have been identified with autoimmune disorders.
My daughter, Marisol, did not particpate at this time, since she was not feeling well.
While there, I saw a photo of a child that I interviewed for my early work on a diabetes nutrition manuscript.
I will keep you posted on the experience of the trial net study.

I just got back from the first of three conferences for advanced training with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I am so glad to be in the field I am in. I love supporting others in developing habits of health and well being.
What a happy, healthy looking bunch of people! I am grateful to have this amazing peer group to grow alongside me.

It is clear to me that diet, lifestyle, mental attitude and physical fitness are the core of reversing, managing and preventing diabetes. The future of health is understanding that everything in our world is energy and that some things support life energy and other things diminish life energy.
Through my work as a diabetes health counselor and educator, I am devoted to honoring the memroy of my father. My father developed type I diabetes when he was 5 years old. 2 weeks after his 9 year old sister developed it. My father had a tough time of it. Dying at age 39, his short life presented me with a script of how not to tend to the body-mind-spirit.
My father experienced the “worst case scenario” of the diabetes experience. By the time I was 9 years old, my father was undergoing massive laser surgery to attempt to reverse retinopathy. By the time I was 12, he went through heart surgery, heart attack and was “legally blind.” The last 4 years of my fathers life, he went through constant agony and excrutiating pain. I vividly remember the amputation of his leg and the post op experience of crying for morphine.
This wasn;t the most pianful time in my life. That came for the two years after my father’s death where I spiraled down into sicknenss and depression with anger and confusion at the purpose of my father living such a hard life. But I thank God now for the pain I experienced and the invaluable lesson my father taught me.
Since my committment to help other people with diabetes, I have been blessed to have learned an amazing arsenal of tools and techniques for uplifting body mind and spirit and I am so glad to have the opportuntiy to serve people with this work.
You can improve your health.
You can change the direction of your life.
You can initiate a series of events that are nothing short of miraculous.
I know this to be true.
